Telecommunication Dorado: Central and Eastern Europe

Over the past few years, growth of telecommunication industry in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) has been impressive; between the years 2002 to 2004, the market volume grew at an annual rate of more than 8 percent. Growth is driven by the mobile industry and an increasing demand for high speed data; mobile subscriptions in CEE increased by 36 percent from 2003 to 2004, and broadband subscription growth rates are expected to remain above 40 percent until 2006.

However, the telecommunication landscape is changing rapidly as new technologies are being introduced, additional infrastructure is rolled out and resellers are entering the markets. This increase in competition impacts the margins of all operators, which have to determine their approach to these developments and rethink their strategy in their own markets.

The CEE telecom industry has been a hot topic for investors for many years. Although major Western European operators are already present, investors still find investment targets with extraordinary profit opportunities. The purpose of this report is to provide investors with a summary of the most relevant trends affecting the telecommunications markets in the CEE region, as well as a brief overview of the fixed-line, mobile and broadband markets in selected countries.

Introduction by Karim Taga and Leopold Glanz, Arthur D. Little Austria. From: Central and Eastern European Perspectives: Yearbook 2005/2006, by Arthur D. Little and F.A.Z. Institut
